AmShip Toledo
Toledo OH
The AmShip yard in Toledo OH was started by John Craig, a New Yorker, who started out in Keyport NJ, where he created two new ships out of a pair of burned-out hulks. He then built a wholly new ship in Wicomico Creek MD before moving to Michigan in 1866. His first Michigan shipyard, Linn & Craig, was in Gibraltar, just above the mouth of the Detroit River, and he built 21 ships there before moving upriver to Trenton in 1883. This site, J. Craig & Sons, was not large enough, however, because in 1890 he moved again, to Toledo, becoming Blythe Craig Shipbuilding and after 1893, plain Craig Shipbuilding. In 1905, John Craig retired and his sons sold the yard to local investors, who renamed it Toledo Shipbuilding and leased it to The American Ship Building Company. Under AmShip's management, it continued as an active shipbuilder until 1930, after which it limited itself to repair and conversion work, except for the construction of two icebreakers during WWII.
At the end of the war, AmShip bought the site and renamed the business AmShip Toledo: they continued to concentrate on the repair and conversion business, building only 12 ships and four forebodies between then and 1982, when AmShip closed. The property then reverted to the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority, which has since leased it to a succession of ship repair contractors. Shipbuilding being in the blood, John Craig's sons started a new Craig Shipbuilding in Long Beach CA, which subsequently became one of Consolidated Steel's yards. It is interesting to note that the series of hull numbers started by John Craig back in 1861 was continued not only in Toledo by Toledo Shipbuilding and AmShip, but also in Long Beach by the new Craig Shipbuilding and Continental Steel. Note that there are several sources of information on the yard's output but that no one of these sources entirely agrees with the others. All the entries in the table below are based on contemporary documentation, primarily MVOTUS.
