Peterson Builders

Sturgeon Bay WI

Most recent update: December 6, 2020.

Martin Peterson founded Peterson Boat Works in 1907 and competed in the market for fishing vessels. The yard was destroyed by fire in 1918 and the property was idle until 1933, when Martin's son Fred reactivated it. It built sub chasers during WWII and reorganized as Peterson Builders in 1946. In the following 50 years, Peterson Builders established itself as a major producer of the more complex types of small naval vessels, including surface combatants and mine-warfare vessels. The yard came under the leadership of Fred Peterson's son Ellsworth in 1965 but closed in 1998 when the next generation of Petersons decided that the site would be more valuable if converted for residential use. At its peak, the Peterson yard covered twelve blocks on the south and east side of the Michigan Street bridge, from Nebraska Street to Rhode Island Street, and from 3rd Avenue to the waterfront. See it from the air on Google here. Although most of the shipyard buildings have been razed, there's been very little redevelopment.
