Levingston Shipbuilding
Orange TX
Most recent update: January 23, 2022.
Levingston Shipbuilding Company was started by Captain George Levingston, whose father, Samuel H. Levingston, an immigrant from Northern Ireland, had started a yard in Orange in 1859 - building paddle-wheel steamers for service on the Sabine River and converting river steamers to gunboats for the Confederate States Navy. After his father retired, Captain George had been Joe Weaver's partner from 1896 through WWI and in 1919 had started his own yard at the foot of Moss Avenue - where Orange Shipbuilding is today. In 1930 he moved the business to the east end of Front Avenue and in 1933 it was incorporated as Levingston Shipbuilding Company. In 1945, George Levingston sold the business to Edgar W. Brown Jr., a major figure in the lumber industry in East Texas, who in 1970 also bought Gulfport Shipbuilding, in Port Arthur. Brown died in 1976 and his estate sold the two shipyards to Ashland Oil, but Ashland never had a clear strategy for the business and sold it in 1982 to the company's CEO, Ed Paden. Paden strengthened the company by diversifying into commercial shipbuilding and steel fabrication, and by introducing Japanese shipbuilding technology, a move that resulted in a significant improvement in productivity and was promptly copied by several other yards, notably NASSCO and Avondale. Levingston closed in 1985, however, in the general collapse of the industry, and the facility was liquidated. Levingston was a remarkable yard. In WWII, it was the Navy's leading builder of ocean tugs, producing more than any other U.S. yard. After the war, when the offshore market got started, the company was in the forefront of the design and construction of many of the early models: it was the only U.S. builder of all five types of offshore drilling rig and established Singapore's Keppel FELS in the business (the L in FELS stands for Levingston.) See the site of the shipyard from the air on Google here. Thanks to Rollie Webb for his contribution to this table.
