Chickasaw Shipbuilding
Chickasaw AL
The shipyard in Chickasaw AL had four lives. It was originally established in 1917, by Chickasaw Shipbuilding & Car Company, a subsidiary of U.S. Steel: it closed in 1925. In the 1930s, the yard was leased by Ingalls Iron Works, but was returned to its owners in 1938 when Ingalls' new yards in Decatur and Pascagoula got started. It was then acquired by Gulf Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of Waterman Steamship Lines, along with a sister yard for naval contracts in Madisonville LA, on the site of the old Baham Shipyard: this company closed after WWII. After sitting idle for a while, it was revived a fourth time in 1979, by Halter Marine, as a builder of large supply boats and tugs: it closed yet again in 1983 and is now a small general cargo terminal.
