Bethlehem Staten Island
Staten Island NY
Bethlehem Steel's shipyard in Staten Island got its start in the McWilliams repair yard in Jersey City NJ, where William Burlee had been a superintendent. Burlee started this yard in Port Richmond in 1888, changing the name to Burlee Dry Dock after McWilliams retired in 1895. In 1898, he took over the neighboring Port Richmond Iron Works and started building engines and steel vessels as well as wooden ones. In 1903, he expanded to Mariners Harbor and in 1907 the name was changed again, to Staten Island Shipbuilding (SISB). In 1929, SISB merged with five other yards in New York Harbor - Theodore A. Crane's Sons Co., a prolific builder of tugs and barges which was located at Breakwater Gap in the Erie Basin in Brooklyn, James Shewan & Sons, which was at the foot of 27th Street in Brooklyn, W. & A. Fletcher & Co., in Hoboken, Morse Dry Dock & Repair Co., in Brooklyn, and New York Harbor Dry Dock Co., in Port Jefferson - and the new organization was christened United Dry Docks, changed to United Shipyards. In the new structure, most barges and small vessels were built in Crane's yard in Brooklyn and the larger vessels in Mariners Harbor. Bethlehem Steel bought the company in June 1938 and expanded its capabilities for the WWII effort, with the aid of $6mm from the Navy. After the war, the small yards were all closed and the Mariners Harbor yard reverted to building tugs and barges. It closed in 1959. The site is now occupied by May Ship Repair, which has recently been building barges there. A surprising number of the vessels built in this yard, especially in the earlier years, were never documented: as a result, many of the entries in this table may be incorrect.
