Bethlehem Key Highway
Baltimore MD
Bethlehem Steel's shipyard in downtown Baltimore MD started out as two separate yards. One was William Skinner & Sons, which was founded in 1815 and became Skinner Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company in 1899: the other was Malster & Reanie, which was founded in 1870 and became Columbian Iron Works & Dry Dock Company in 1880. The two companies combined in 1906 but used the Skinner name until 1914 when they became Baltimore Dry Dock & Shipbuilding Company. In 1922, they were acquired by Bethlehem Steel, which operated the two yards in the repair market, complementing their big construction yard across the harbor at Sparrows Point. Bethlehem designated this operation their Key Highway division with an Upper Yard on the north-east side of Federal Hill and a Lower Yard on the west side of Locust Point. When Bethlehem got out of the shipyard business in 1983, both the Key Highway yards were redeveloped: the Upper Yard is now the Harbor Island residential complex, while the Lower Yard is now the Under Armour industrial complex.
