Patrol Frigates

(PF)

Most recent update: April 26, 2015.

In WWII, MARCOM, acting on behalf of the Navy, contracted with eight shipbuilders for the construction of 100 300-foot patrol frigates, of a design - designated S2-S2-AQ1 - that was based on the Royal Navy's River-class corvette, of which two had already been bought from Canadian Vickers. Four of the 100 were later cancelled, leaving a total fleet of 98. of this fleet, 37 were almost immediately transferred to the Department of Commerce for service as weather ships; the 21 built in Providence RI by Walsh-Kaiser were re-designated Colony-class frigates and delivered to the RN; 28 were transferred to the U.S.S.R. when the war ended; 6 went to other nations and 6 were scrapped. Since the war, the Navy has not built any patrol frigates for its own use, preferring smaller vessels. In the 1960s and 70s, however, six ships were built to essentially the same design, four for Iran and two for Thailand.
