Missouri Valley Bridge

Evansville IN

Most recent update: August 7, 2021.

The Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Company's shipyard in Evansville IN, on the Ohio River, was built for the war effort and closed after the war: the plant was destroyed by fire in 1946 and is now a parking lot, but the ways are still visible when the river is low. See the site from the air on Google here. A wonderful book about the yard, "A Cornfield Shipyard", by Andrew L. Clark, is published by M. T. Publishing, P.O. Box 6802, Evansville IN 47719. In addition, there is an actual LST-preserved as a museum in Evansville: visit it here. As well as building 171 LSTs in Evansville, Missouri Valley also built LCTs, lighters and seaplane derricks at a plant in Leavenworth KS, on the Missouri River, which continued in operation after the war. See that table here.
