Electric Launch Co. (ELCO)

Bayonne NJ

Most recent update: August 6, 2017.

The Electric Launch Company, or Elco, was a sister company to Electric Boat, formed in 1892 and closed in 1949. It was run by Henry R. Sutphen for all but the first three of those years. Elco built pleasure craft in peacetime and large numbers of high-speed boats during both world wars. When the company started out, with a contract for 55 boats for the Chicago World's Fair, the hulls were subcontracted, but in 1902 they built their own yard in Bayonne, at the foot of North Street and extending northeast for six blocks: the site is now residential, with no sign of the boat yard, but the marina there is still called the Elco Boat Basin. Although Elco closed in 1949, it was reborn under new owners in 1987 and can be found at elcomotoryachts.com, which has some interesting history and old pictures.

The table identifies about 1850 boats, but Elco's hull numbers ran past 4000 and some sources say that the total number of boats built was close to 6000, so there are a few missing.
