Consolidated Shipbuilding
Morris Heights NY
Consolidated Shipbuilding was the result of the acquisition by Gas Engine & Power Co. of Charles L. Seabury Co., in June 1896. Gas Engine & Power Co. had been established in 1885, initially at Brook Avenue and 131st Street, but from 1887 in Morris Heights. Its founders were F. W. Ofeldt, the inventor of the naptha engine, and Clement Gould, and the company rapidly became famous for its naphtha-powered launches. Charles L. Seabury Co. had been established in 1889, in Nyack NY. Its founders were Charles L. Seabury and William Parslow, both of whom had worked for Gas Engine & Power, and the company rapidly became famous for its steam-powered yachts. Following the merger, the Seabury operation was relocated to Morris Heights but the two operations continued as separate entities until about 1913, when they began to use the cumbersome name of Charles L. Seabury Co. and Gas Engine & Power Co., Consolidated. In 1920, they dropped all the old names and became plain Consolidated Shipbuilding. The yard in Morris Heights was on Matthewson Road, at the southern end of what is now Roberto Clemente State Park. See also a great photograph here, but note that this is a huge picture: you have to move to the top right quadrant and zoom in on the shipyard, which can be seen under the arch of the bridge. After WWII, Consolidated bought the Robert Jacob shipyard and the neighboring B. F. Wood shipyard on City Island and closed the Morris Heights yard. See the Robert Jacob table for Consolidated's post-war production. The company ceased to be an active boatbuilder in 1958 but a successor company continues as a yacht repair center. In the table below, the first group of boats, with the 3-digit hull #s, are Seabury's, starting back in their Nyack shipyard; the second group, with the 4-digit hull #s, are Gas Engine & Power's; the third group continues the 4-digit series for the combined yards. Be warned that there is some confusion in the middle range of years, from 1913 through 1922, as to which boats were built by which company in which shipyard. Many thanks to Alan Dinn, Historian of Purdy Boat Company, for his enormous contribution to this table.
