Violet LA

(Previously Operated By Alabama & New Orleans Transportation)

Most recent update: March 3, 2021.

This facility was originally set up by Great Lakes Engineering Works (GLEW) at Violet LA to assemble a series of self propelled barges ordered by Alabama & New Orleans Transportation (ANOT). Assembly and completion of at least 9 barges of various sizes has been confirmed. At least 18 and possibly 22 barges were ordered between 1912 and 1914. The facility in Violet was owned by ANOT and appears to have been idle until 1917 when 4 oil tankers were ordered for the Mexican oil trade. The facility was acquired by National Shipbuilding Corporation in 1918 who continued building barges and other small vessels at this site until at least 1925 when the facility was permanently closed.
