Milwaukee Shipyard

Milwaukee WI

Most recent update: January 3, 2022.

The yard that came to be known as Milwaukee Shipyard was started in 1863 by a group of 12 ships' carpenters operating as a co-operative. It was acquired by Allan, McClellan & Co. In 1867 and then in 1874 by Captain John Fitzgerald, who incorporated it as Milwaukee Shipyard Company. In 1894, the company merged with Wolf & Davidson as Milwaukee Dry Dock Company, but its days as a shipbuilder were over: it would concentrate on ship repair from then on. The yard was on the south bank of the Menominee River, near the Sixth Street bridge.
