Table 1: Powered Boats and Yachts
Most recent update: December 18, 2015.
The Herreshoff brothers - Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, or Captain Nat, who designed the boats, and John Brown Herreshoff, or Mr. J. B., who, although totally blind, ran the business - started building boats in Bristol RI in 1863 and formed Herreshoff Manufacturing in 1878. The company is best known for its beautiful and extremely successful yachts, including many America's Cup boats. The shipyard closed in 1945 but lives on as a museum: visit it at herreshoff.org.
Note that Herreshoff had two series of hull numbers, this table includes only powered boats and yachts, sailing boats and yachts are here. Both tables are based on the shipyard's original hand-written lists, reproduced in the Haffenreffer-Herreshoff Collection, with extensive additional data from multiple editions of Merchant Vessels of the United States, Lloyd's List of Yachts and a wide variety of other sources. There are still many gaps and inconsistencies.
