Ocean Surveillance Ships
(AGOS)
One element of the naval build-up of the 1980s was the construction of 18 Stalwart-class ocean surveillance ships, designed to monitor worldwide movements of Soviet submarines. Before they were even completed, however, the Cold War was over and they were no longer needed: all 18 moved on to new careers. A new class of four larger ships was then built, which are still in service. A second new-class was started, but the first ship was a contractual disaster and the remainder were cancelled.
