Prior to World War One, Guy M. Standifer and James F. Clarkson operated the Standifer-Clarkson Shipbuilding Company, which was just west of the Interstate 5 bridge in North Portland, where Diversified Marine is today. As the war approached, Standifer built two additional shipyards across the river in Vancouver. One of these new yards - just west of the Interstate 5 bridge, where the Port of Vancouver's Terminal One is today - was for wooden ships: the other - just west of the railroad bridge - was for steel ships. Both the Vancouver yards were closed in 1921: the Portland yard continued as a repair facility. There are some great old photographs here
