Winslow Marine Railway
Port Blakeley WA / Winslow WA
Most recent update: August 30, 2016.
Hall Bros. Marine Railway & Shipbuilding Co. was started by Henry Hall in 1878. In 1903 it outgrew its site in Port Blakely and Mr. Hall developed a new and larger yard on a 77-acre site at Eagle Harbor, on Bainbridge Island, near the village of Madrone, which was later renamed Winslow, in honor of Mr. Hall's deceased brother. Hall sold the business in 1916 to Captain James Griffiths, who renamed it Winslow Marine Railway & Shipbuilding Company, but leased it the following year to D. W. Hartzel, Inc., for USSB work involving the installation of machinery in hulls built by others. Griffiths took the yard back after WWI and ran it primarily as a repair facility for ferry operators. During WWII, he built steel minesweepers, reaching a peak workforce of 2,300. The yard was sold in 1948 and renamed Commercial Ship Repair of Winslow, but gradually shrank and finally closed in 1959. The property was then split into a marina, an apartment complex and a Washington State Ferries maintenance facility. See it from the air on Google here.
