Julius Petersen Inc.
Upper Nyack NY
This shipyard was started by John Van Houten in 1798: a marine railway was added in 1834. It was sold to the Voorhis family after the Civil War, and then to Samuel Ayres & Son in 1893. The Ayres died in 1904 and 1905, however, and the yard was sold in 1909 to B. W. Church, who renamed it Hudson Yacht & Boat Company. This entity folded in 1913 and the yard was sold to Julius Petersen, a Danish immigrant who had previously built boats on Staten Island and in Tarrytown. Then, in 1928, Petersen bought the yard established for wartime construction by International Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering. The main yard was at the foot of Spear Street, on the south side of Burd Street: it is still operating as a boatyard, although it stopped building boats after Petersen died in 1949. It was damaged by Hurricane Sandy but has been rebuilt and is now called North River Shipyard. Visit it at northrivershipyard.com.
