T.S. Marvel Shipbuilding
Newburgh NY
This yard was started in 1876 as Ward, Stanton & Co., by Luther C. Ward and Samuel Stanton, formerly of Highland Furnace and Washington Iron Works: its production manager was Thomas S. Marvel, who, together with his father before him, had been building boats in the Newburgh area since 1836. The company failed in 1885 as a result of an uninsured fire on two ferries that were under construction. The unfinished vessels and a portion of the site were sold to James Bigler, who operated it until 1891, while T. S. Marvel & Co. started operations on the balance of the site and continued there until the eve of the First World War. The Marvel company failed in 1914 and in 1916 the site was leased to a new venture, Tank Shipbuilding Corporation, which operated it until 1921. The Marvel family re-acquired the site in 1922 and operated it until the end of WWII, when it was closed again, lying idle until 1976, when it reopened as Steel Style Inc., (now Steelways Inc.), an industrial fabricator. The yard is located on South Water Street, near the foot of South William Street.
