Dachel-Carter Shipbuilding
Benton Harbor MI
Dachel-Carter was started in 1915 by Peter Dachel and A. B. Carter, two former employees of Truscott Boatbuilding. In the 1930s, it struggled to survive and built few boats, but was saved from closing by new investors and had a busy WWII, growing to over 600 employees. It folded after the war. The yard was at the west end of West Main Street, on the Benton Harbor Ship Canal: it later became a machining plant for Whirlpool Corporation, whose corporate headquarters are just across the street.
