John W. Lynn
Philadelphia PA
John W. Lynn (a.1827-1890) originally worked at Vaughan & Lynn, which morphed into Birely & Lynn. That yard was at the foot of Hanover Street (now Columbia Avenue) in Kensington, but with the rise of railroad yards near that site, John Lynn and his father, Robert, broke off in 1861 and opened a new yard on land owned by engine builders Merrick & Sons, at the foot of Reed Street in Southwark, where the Comcast building is now. John Lynn is said to have built thirty ocean steamers during his career, but this figure may include those that he built when he was part of Birely & Lynn. The yard closed in February 1870.
