Divine Burtis
New York Ny and Brooklyn NY
Divine Burtis started his shipbuilding business in 1840 and closed it in 1905. (Note that reliable sources, including his tombstone, say that his first name was Divine, not Devine, although the latter spelling is common throughout the usual maritime sources.) The yard was originally located in Manhattan but moved in the 1850s to a site at the foot of Conover Street, in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, where Pier 44 is today. The table below is clearly incomplete: did he never build anything that wasn't a ferry.
