RCMP Ships, Boats and Craft
Most recent update: May 3, 2019.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police was organized in 1920 by consolidating the Royal Northwest Mounted Police and the Dominion Police. The Marine Service was created in 1932 by combining the RCMP's various boat detachments into a single organization and consolidating it with the National Revenue Preventive Service. Most of this force was assigned to the RCN for WWII and after the war a new RCMP fleet was created, called the Marine Division, using surplus naval vessels. In 1950, the marine assets of the British Columbia Provincial Police joined the RCMP, but in 1962 the Canadian Coast Guard was reorganized and took over the RCMP's search-and-rescue responsibilities, significantly reducing its need for boats. Today, the RCMP has only seven boats.
This table attempts to list all the vessels that have been built for or acquired by the RCMP and its predecessors: it was far from complete when I first posted it but it has since been worked over quite a bit. It is still incomplete, however, because the sources are limited in their coverage and there is a lot of confusion among them, resulting in many gaps and data that are of doubtful accuracy.
